Black Swan (2010)

Director:  Darren Aronofsky

Writers: Mark Heyman (screenplay), Andres Heinz (screenplay), and 2 more credits »

Stars:Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel

Plot Summary : Nina (Portman) is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica (Hershey) who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side - a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

Reviews -  Black Swan is an enthralling and visceral experience from beginning to end. Aronofsky has used what he has learned from making the raw and unflinching The Wrestler and the cerebral horror and incredibly disturbing Requiem for a Dream, and has crafted a film that you will simply not be able to take your eyes off of. He builds up rather slow, but right after that first moment of off-the-rails insanity, he delivers one hell of an incredible piece of cinema. One that is not easily able to be classified to any one genre.

Reviews - Intense, powerful, and "romantic", Black Swan is a psychological thriller that will leave you satisfied, and an amazing performance by Natalie Portman makes it all the better.  by.Mami Te Quiero March 28, 2011
- This film is a downward spiral into psychosis. Portman and Kunis do a fantastic job drawing you into this dark drama. But the problem may be how far the film goes. It draws you so close to the main characters unraveling that your left feeling uncomfortable in your own skin. The movie while a masterful piece of art is more unsettling than entraining. But thats not to say the journey is not worth taking. Black Swan is one movie that should be watch once... and the given a second thought before watching it again.  by.Jason McCoy March 28, 2011

Reviews  - In this life, are we a black swan, a white one, or something in the middle. Are we excessively polite that sometimes a situation in our lives has to irritate us in order to teach us that life is imperfect. Who knows, perhaps, life is perfect!
This movie is not a masterpiece, because of the weak climax and ‘not so dramatic’ transformation of Nina. Natalie Portman, I felt like she could have pushed her self a little bit further, otherwise, she gives the feeling as if she tried her best to become Nina.  by. Oz, i
- The sound in this film blew my mind. It served to enhance the intense drama and camera angles perfectly. Whether the crunch of bones, the anxious rapid breathing or the soul tearing PIT score, this movie affected me down to my bones. King's Speech made me feel his triumph; but Black Swan made me feel her pain. Hail Natalie for her work in this role of a lifetime. by. mgm1981, GRNJ
